How to Make Spiced Rum Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is one of the most iconic cocktails, dating back to 1862, when a variation using Holland gin (Genever) first appeared in Jerry Thomas’ Bartender’s Guide: How to Mix Drinks. The whiskey version didn’t surface until 1880, when it was reportedly created by a bartender in Louisville, Kentucky, at The Pendennis Club.

This Spiced Rum Old Fashioned is a bold, flavorful twist on the classic, replacing whiskey with a smooth combination of Chairman’s Reserve Rum and Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum. Infused with Angostura and orange bitters, this drink delivers a rich, aromatic experience that’s perfect for any cocktail lover.

Ingredients:

  • 30 mL Chairman’s Reserve Rum – A premium aged rum for depth and complexity.
  • 30 mL Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum – Infuses warm, aromatic spices into the mix.
  • Angostura Bitters – Classic bitters for balance and depth.
  • Regan’s No. 6 Orange Bitters – Adds a citrusy brightness.
  • 1 Sugar Cube – The perfect sweetener to round out the flavors.

Instructions:

  1. Place the sugar cube into a mixing glass.
  2. Add a few dashes of both Angostura and orange bitters.
  3. Lightly muddle the sugar to dissolve it.
  4. Pour in both rums for a bold, spiced base.
  5. Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for 20-30 rotations to chill and dilute.
  6. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.
  7. Garnish with a twist of orange for a fragrant finish.

Enjoy your Spiced Rum Old Fashioned, a bold and aromatic take on a timeless classic!
